CADE, in consortium with protarget AG, Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. / German Aerospace Center (DLR), Solar-Institut Jülich of the Aachen University of Applied Sciences (SIJ), and Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), develops the first power generation plant based solely on solar thermal power to supply process heating along 24 hours a day.
The objective of EDITOR is to carry out industrial research that demonstrates and verifies the dispatchability and performance of a solar power system designed for continuous operation. The system will consist of a mid-sized parabolic trough collector loop combined with a concrete thermal energy storage and is experimentally designed for industrial applications requiring heating or cooling on a 24 hour basis.
EDITOR’s goal is not just to verify an innovative, groundbreaking system to storage energy based on concrete, but it will also operate on temperatures over 400°C, which is made possible thanks to a new receiver tube and an innovative, environmentally friendly silicone-based thermal oil.
The three years project not only involves the technical activities of constructing, commissioning and executing completely the solar power system, but will also cover commercial considerations, such as studying the feasibility of scale-up, identifying future customers, and communication regarding this important development with the potential market.
CADE will be responsible for, among other workpackages, the design, supply and start-up of thermal energy storage system based on concrete.
Kick-off meeting was held in Larnaca (Cyprus) on 22nd and 23rd February 2016.
EDITOR Project is financed by SOLAR-ERA.NET, a FP7 funded European network of national and regional funding organizations and RTD and innovation programmes in the field of solar power generation.
