EDITOR Project. 24h Continuous thermal power supply based on CSP and concrete thermal energy storage

The system shall consist of a mid-sized parabolic trough collector loop combined with a concrete thermal energy storage, and it is experimentally designed for industrial applications that require heating or cooling on a 24 hour basis.

CADE, in consortium with protarget AG, Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. / German Aerospace Center (DLR), Solar-Institut Jülich of the Aachen University of Applied Sciences (SIJ), and Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), develops the first power generation plant based solely on solar thermal power to supply process heating along 24 hours a day.

The objective of EDITOR is to carry out industrial research that demonstrates and verifies the dispatchability and performance of a solar power system designed for continuous operation. The system will consist of a mid-sized parabolic trough collector loop combined with a concrete thermal energy storage and is experimentally designed for industrial applications requiring heating or cooling on a 24 hour basis.

The experimental solar thermal energy plant will be located in Cyprus, a country that features excellent solar resources.

EDITOR’s goal is not just to verify an innovative, groundbreaking system to storage energy based on concrete, but it will also operate on temperatures over 400°C, which is made possible thanks to a new receiver tube and an innovative, environmentally friendly silicone-based thermal oil.

The three years project not only involves the technical activities of constructing, commissioning and executing completely the solar power system, but will also cover commercial considerations, such as studying the feasibility of scale-up, identifying future customers, and communication regarding this important development with the potential market.

CADE will be responsible for, among other workpackages, the design, supply and start-up of thermal energy storage system based on concrete.

Kick-off meeting was held in Larnaca (Cyprus) on 22nd and 23rd February 2016.

EDITOR Project is financed by SOLAR-ERA.NET, a FP7 funded European network of national and regional funding organizations and RTD and innovation programmes in the field of solar power generation.

CADE (est. 2003) is a Spain-based company, expert provider of advanced engineering and consulting services in CSP sector worldwide as an specialist on design and engineering of equipment and plant systems, evaluation and optimization of operating commercial CSP plants, and consulting of failure evaluation and integrity on critic equipment.

THE-NEED-FOR-AUTOMATION

The Need for Automation in the Area of Mechanics and Simulation

Modern industry demands efficiency, precision and speed, especially in the field of mechanical engineering and simulation. Automation has emerged as a crucial answer to these demands, and tools like Python and IronPython are leading this revolution, particularly in environments like ANSYS. In this post, we’ll explore why automation is essential

How using green oxygen can reduce the costs of green hydrogen

Green hydrogen, produced by electrolysis of water, is a promising option for the transition to a more sustainable and decarbonised energy economy. In this process, electricity, ideally obtained from renewable sources such as solar photovoltaics, is used to break down water (H2O) into hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2). This hydrogen
