This initiative is formed by a collaboration with the University Carlos III of Madrid (UC3M). Project CPP2024-011741 funded by MICIU/AEI /10.13039/501100011033.
The project aims to develop an innovative and sustainable thermal energy storage (TES) system based on the use of alternative cementitious materials (AAM, HM, and LC3), construction and demolition waste (CDW), and advanced phase change materials (PCMs) for medium- to high-temperature applications. It addresses key challenges related to thermal conductivity, durability, and material stability, while promoting circular economy principles through the valorisation of industrial by-products and waste streams.
The project combines material development and characterisation, numerical modelling, and experimental validation to optimise heat transfer, system design, and performance. In parallel, it integrates advanced control strategies based on machine learning to enable autonomous energy management. The proposed solution is assessed from environmental and economic perspectives and validated at laboratory and pilot scale, with the objective of delivering a scalable and efficient TES technology for industrial decarbonisation.
