ATJ ESB RM Project
Santiago Bernabéu Stadium Playing Field Automation Project (Real Madrid) 2021–2023
Project
Overview
In 2019, Real Madrid C.F. launched the ambitious renovation of the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, aiming to establish it as a global benchmark for sports venues and entertainment arenas. A key objective of this transformation was to generate new revenue streams through an innovative operating model that ensures the stadium can be used 365 days a year.
At the heart of the renovation is the retractable, automated playing field system, stored underground and equipped with cutting-edge technologies to maintain the pitch in optimal condition. The executive project was developed by SENER, and the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contract was awarded to PHB Weserhütte in 2021.
CADE was involved from the early stages as the technical advisor to Real Madrid C.F., overseeing the executive design and EPC tendering process. Later, CADE took on roles as part of the Project Management Team (PMT) and Owner’s Engineering, ensuring optimal development of the project in terms of technical quality, cost, and timeline.

ATJ Project
History
Construction of the ATJ (Automated Turf System) began in May 2022, immediately after the final UEFA Champions League match at the Santiago Bernabéu. The initial activities included dismantling the existing pitch, with the urgent goal of having the new system ready for the season opener on September 3, 2022.
In November 2023, the ATJ system achieved Provisional Acceptance following operational and maintenance validation and oversight by CADE. Real Madrid C.F. President Mr. Florentino Pérez highlighted this milestone as a resounding success during the club’s General Assembly of Representatives.
