On July 8, a moving tribute was paid to Professor Ignacio Pérez Arriaga as part of the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Instituto de Investigación Tecnológica (IIT, Institute for Research in Technology) at Universidad Pontificia Comillas, which was founded thanks to Professor Pérez Arriaga’s determination to create a research institute modeled on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

IIT 40th Anniversary Opening Session
Today, forty years after its creation, the IIT is a national and international benchmark in training researchers and in creating flagship projects for Spanish engineering.
The event was attended and addressed by numerous professionals (colleagues and friends of Professor Pérez Arriaga) from MIT, ETH Zurich, the Florence School of Regulation (FSR) and Comillas-ICAI. The speeches covered his scientific achievements and contributions to electrical engineering in four key areas: power system stability, models, regulation and universal access to electricity.
The opening session was chaired by the Third Vice-President of the Spanish Government and Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Ms. Teresa Ribera, the Rector of Universidad Pontificia Comillas, Enrique Sanz, SJ, and the Director of the IIT, Dr. Paloma Cucala. In her speech, the minister stated that “…there has been no forum, no important aspect of the energy life of our country or of the world in which Ignacio was not present and, with him, the IIT”.
The second part of the commemorative event featured a round table entitled “Contributions and challenges in achieving a more sustainable energy system”, with Ms. Marina Serrano, President of AELEC; Mr. Nemesio Fernández-Cuesta, former Secretary of State for Energy; and Mr. Luis Atienza, former Minister of Agriculture and former Chairman of Red Eléctrica de España. The round table addressed various issues concerning the future of the energy system, but it is worth highlighting the importance Fernández-Cuesta gave to three fundamental pillars:
- Investment in transmission grids.
- A moratorium on the closure of nuclear power plants
- Investment in storage
Regarding this last point, although there was no time to explore it in sufficient depth, the different storage options were outlined.
CADE and Energy Storage
At CADE, we have been researching storage solutions for more than a decade, mainly thermal energy storage (TES), and we are now in a position to offer the market an integrated system for the necessary decarbonization of industries in which heat plays a significant role as an energy source for the production process.
SolidTES is an end-to-end solution that combines thermal storage from thermal or electrical sources with the supply of thermal energy. In the future, it will also be possible to integrate it with the power grid, giving it the intelligence needed for efficient resource management.
At www.solidtes.com we showcase models and the constant evolution of our progress in Energy Storage to provide industry with renewable, decarbonized resources.
